Since established in 1955, PACE continually strives to advance the profession of childhood education. California  has a diverse population and soci0-econminc composition which has allowed for the development of an equally diverse response to the early education needs of children.

According to the most recent data compiled by California’s Resource and Referral Network (R&R Network) nearly 64% of California’s early care and education is provided by private licensed centers. PACE members, who represent this percentage, advocate for the continued professional development  of those who provide early learning opportunities for California’s children and the sustainability of the support services that help strengthen their families.

PACE believes that EVERYDAY is a great day to Stand Up for Children and to be an advocate for California’s early care and education system!

  2. Early Learning: America’s Middle Class Promise Begins Early

by PACE in Category: Advocacy,Child Behavior/Development,Everyday,For The Adults,PACE,Uncategorized

“I propose working with states to make high-quality preschool available to every child in America… Let’s do what works, and make sure none of our children start the race of life already behind. Let’s give our kids that chance.”

    – Barack Obama, Feb. 12, 2013

    The Need

Far too many children lack access to preschool. The need for early learning is clear, as studies prove: children who have rich early learning experiences are   better prepared to thrive in school. Yet the US ranks 28th in early learning enrollment. For those who do attend, quality varies widely. Less than a third of 4- year-olds in poverty attend a high-quality preschool program, and the gap is especially pronounced in low-income communities. Doing better is more than just a moral and educational imperative, it’s smart government: Every public dollar spent on preschool returns $7 through increased productivity and savings on public assistance and criminal justice.

    The Goal

The goal is to enable every American 4-year-old to attend a quality preschool program — one characterized by well-organized learning experiences, guided exploration, art, and storytelling, led by a skilled teacher. In addition, the Department of Education will work with the Department of Health and Human Services to significantly expand and improve services to younger children.

  3. Do You Know What Shapes Brain Circuitry?

by PACE in Category: Advocacy,At Your Center/School,Child Behavior/Development,Everyday,For The Adults,PACE

Serve & Return Interaction Shapes Brain Circuitry.

One of the most essential experiences in shaping the architecture of the developing brain is “serve and return” interaction between children and significant adults in their lives. Young children naturally reach out for interaction through babbling, facial expressions, and gestures, and adults respond with the same kind of vocalizing and gesturing back at them. This back-and-forth process is fundamental to the wiring of the brain, especially in the earliest years.

Harvard University’s Center on the Developing Child and the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child developed the following video (part two of a three-part series) titled “Three Core Concepts in Early Development”. The series depicts how advances in neuroscience, molecular biology, and genomics now give us a much better understanding of how early experiences are built into our bodies and brains, for better or for worse. Healthy development in the early years provides the building blocks for educational achievement, economic productivity, responsible citizenship, lifelong health, strong communities, and successful parenting of the next generation.

  4. Budgets from a Children’s Perspective

by PACE in Category: Advocacy,Child Behavior/Development,Everyday,For The Adults,PACE

On March 20, 2013 the bipartisan children’s advocacy organization First     Focus released a comparison of the federal fiscal year 2014 budget  resolutions scheduled for floor consideration in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives this week. The analysis concludes that the Senate proposal protects federal investments in America’s children, while the House proposal would impede progress on problems facing children.

“The Senate budget protects critical investments in kids, while the House budget would make nearly every problem children face worse,” said First Focus President Bruce Lesley.

  6. Advocacy

by Katie O'Neil in Category: Advocacy,PACE

Today PACE is up in Sacramento with some of our members at our annual Day At The Capitol event.  The day started with a training from our PACE Legislative Advocate on the best way to get your voice heard, then off they all went to meet with Legislators.

We’ve all heard how important advocacy is and how much of a difference it can make.  In fact we’ve been at meetings recently where Legislators themselves have said to us that until you get more people, more of their constituents, speaking up there is not much more they can do.

We are working hard everyday to make that easier for you to do!  Stick with us and I know we can make a difference.

  8. The BIG Question

by Katie O'Neil in Category: Advocacy,Everyday,For The Adults,PACE

How to make everyone Stand up for Children?

As you know this is the theme of our upcoming event Day At The Capitol but more and more it’s the question we need to be answering everyday.  Legislators have come back to us and told us that we need to get the community involved and behind us before they can take any more action.  Below is a piece from a guest blog author, the PACE Public Policy Coordinator, Heather Phebus.

Throughout the past month PACE Advocates have been present at several “big picture” events throughout the state. As advocates for quality early care and education, and family services throughout California, it is important to take the opportunity to take a step back and look at the bigger picture of our state and reflect upon how its gears turn; but moreover, how the development of our youngest citizens fits into and contributes to the constant movement of that system.

The essential need for a child to have access to quality early care and education is not new argument — for years research from an array of fields directly and indirectly related to child development, education, and health and humans services has exemplified why the investment in the earliest years of a child’s life are vital to the productive and positive impact on our state, nation and the world. The big question is — how do you, as a provider of quality early care and education and an advocate for children, inform members of your community on the importance of quality early learning and encourage others to Stand Up for Children?

Do you have ideas on how you would inform the masses to Stand Up for Children? Let PACE know, we would love to learn how to mobilize our advocacy efforts.

  9. Know what’s going on with DSS

by Katie O'Neil in Category: Advocacy,PACE

Today’s Tip may be an obvious one for the Owners and Directors of Early Care and Education centers out there but it’s worth repeating and pointing out.

PACE has a very active committee that works directly with the Department of Social Services – Child Care Licensing Division on behalf of PACE members.  Every meeting that committee brings concerns from the membership regarding licensing, violations and anything else brought to our attention and those concerns are addressed.

The DSS-CCLD site is a great place for you to bookmark in your browser and check back there regularly.  Here are some other quick links that we have as a result of our relationship with them.

  10. Help lead the way!

by Katie O'Neil in Category: Advocacy,For The Adults,PACE

PACE as a membership association offers a lot of amazing benefits for our members as business owners and professionals in the early care and education industry.  Our goal here in the office is to continue to make it better each year.

    How?

We could not do it without our amazing volunteers!  I wanted to take today’s post to thank our volunteers throughout the state for taking time out of their days to sit on committees and give us their ideas and expertise to, hopefully, make the membership increase in value year after year.  It is through these ideas and the feedback our volunteers gather from our members that we are able to pr0vide you with trainings for quality early care and education, advocate in Sacramento and Washington DC and include discounts and deals exclusively for our members.

Are you passionate about child care? About making your business the best it can be?  In this new membership year join a PACE committee and share ways that PACE can expand our offerings to continue our mission and become a volunteer with PACE.

Check out this form with more information about each committee opportunity, fill it out and send it to the office.  We are looking forward to an exciting new year and can’t wait to work with all of you!
