  1. Could you use some guidance?

by Katie O'Neil in Category: At Your Center/School,Child Behavior/Development,PACE

Never fear there are comprehensive Child Care Provider guides available as a resource on the Let’s Move Child Care site.

The first is guide by Nemours KidsHealth.org and is a comprehensive guide with outlines best on age and developmental stage.

Another option available is the Healthy Habits for Life Resource Kit that was a collaboration between Sesame Workshop, Nemours, and Nemours’ KidsHealth.org. It has links to download the guide in either English or Spanish as well as additional videos and resources from Sesame Workshop.

If neither of these work for you there are even more options on the page for you to explore!

Nemours KidsHealth.orgis one of the partners on the Let’s Move Child Care initiative.  They created some great sheets to use with some of your older children to help get them involved and having fun while still focusing on the idea of healthy eating.  Use these coloring sheets to make it fun!

  3. Take the Quiz

by Katie O'Neil in Category: At Your Center/School,Child Behavior/Development,Everyday,PACE

I’m sure you all have heard about the First Lady’s Let’s Move program to end childhood obesity.  They have a section on their website all about starting early and provide a bunch of tools and resources for child care centers to work with the children and their families.  Below I’ve quoted from their website why they have focused, in part, on quality early care providers like you.

“Three times more children are obese today than just 30 years ago. Now, nearly a third of kids in America are overweight or obese. The rate skyrockets to almost 40% in African American and Hispanic communities. Plus,

more and more children are being diagnosed with obesity-related conditions that were traditionally only seen in adults — like type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Even more disheartening, many of these kids will experience serious conditions like heart disease, cancer, and stroke as adults.

Because you’ve dedicated your career to taking care of young children, you have the opportunity to help turn these frightening statistics around. As kids’ bodies and brains develop, they can form unhealthy food preferences and habits that are hard to break. That’s why the First Lady is launching Let’s Move! Child Care — a nationwide call-to-action that empowers child care providers, like you, to make positive health changes in children, early on, that could last a lifetime.”

I want to take the next few entries to highlight some of the really useful tools and resources they have for you!

Today’s highlight is the Let’s Move Child Care Checklist Quiz.  You can take it today and get an idea of if you’re ready to help take on the challenge of childhood obesity!

Come back tomorrow for more tools or check it out for yourself!
